Hold, Balance, Offer. 2022. Motorized flip-book triptych. (each 8” x 8” x 8” = approx 30” wide x 8” tall installed)

This triptych flip book explores the underlying expectations of a woman's role as a mother and wife. Hands depict the gestures of holding and offering, because like words and books, our hands are vehicles of communication. We use our hands to hold our children, turn the pages of a book, and reach out to others. Achieving balance in familial relationships is a process of give and take. This work reflects upon the stages of this process. Gestures enable everyday actions that have profound consequences in our lives. A book is a container for language, a sequence of codes that shape our understanding. Communication operates below the fold of consciousness, invisibly shaping our conceptual framework and relationships in the world.
