Both, 2018
Both was created in response to the current state of discourse in America, with its extreme oppositions and ‘us versus them’ mentality. The piece asks us to consider a more unified approach to political dialogue, where ideas from disparate ideologies are equally considered. The word ‘BOTH’ is rendered in multiple directions to evoke this possibility as the text becomes warped, and its authority is diminished. The typographic composition creates a binary shape that repeats to compose two opposing arrows, signifying the limitations of binary systems of understanding. Alternative words that speak to the problems of political division have been subtly intertwined into the piece to break the pattern and require a deeper engagement with the work.
